about

"His love for folk music manifests itself throughout this lovely album." - Folk Radio UK

"Songs From the Attic is a genuine, carefully considered album which is made with a lot of heart. It deserves to be noticed." - Bright Young Folk

'Songs From The Attic' was the result of nine months spent researching and writing traditional folk songs on the Grizzly Folk blog. Each song at some point began to get under my skin and, following a lengthy process of fairly obsessive study and performance, I found I'd fallen in love with them – just as many, many people had done before me and will do again.

These traditional songs very quickly elbowed the original songs out of my live set, so I thought it might be worthwhile recording them as a snapshot of where I was at that point. Two original songs managed to stay put, mainly due to the storytelling qualities that I felt they shared with the traditional songs.

This new release adds 'The Greenland Whale Fishery' (traditional) when started to creep into my live set towards the end of 2017, but failed to make it on to the original release (I'm not sure why). It also contains a recording of 'The Unquiet Grave', as taken from the video of the same name which originally featured on the Grizzly Folk Youtube channel.

The original album came out on September 19th, 2017, with only nine songs. It stayed online for a month or so before I took it down again, unsatisfied with how slight it felt. After listening to the out-takes I decided to re-release it, including the lead single, 'Nobody Writes Protest Songs Anymore' (original). This download also features the full sleeve notes, plus the video that accompanied the release of 'My Old Hat That I Got On'.

While I certainly can't call this a 'trad album' anymore, it better represents the gigs I was playing during the year I discovered traditional folk music.

I hope you enjoy it.

Jon Wilks Whitchurch, UK

Jon started writing about traditional folk music as a way to learn more about it. He began his blogging journey shortly after discovering that his grandparents met and 'courted' at Cecil Sharp House. When he's not blogging about it, he plays traditional music in a fingerpicking rub-a-dub style-ee. His debut solo album, 'Songs from the Attic' came out in 2017. ... more
